Back to Pramuka Island - lack of conservation. It's all about the $ - and who can blame them??

Most tourists to Jakarta may visit Sepa Island, linky However, I took a school group to Pramuka island again, which is not as well set up for tourists. (Though they would like to attract more tourists, obviously for $)

Sadly, many of my Indonesian Students said that this was the first time they had seen a sunset or stars.....

We chatted with the local head guy and he has decided to build another wharf on the other side of the island currently housing sea grass meadows (which happen to be good for the endangered sea turtles.)

When we pointed this out to him he replied that they dont care about sea grasses or the mangroves anymore as tourists only want to see coral reefs, so that is all they need. When one of my students replied with a comment along the lines of sea grasses provided habitats for small fish he replied with they dont need or want small fish only big ones!

I kid you not!

The local rangers were also proudly showing us the new jetski that they had bought. (out of their environmental budget) - the plan was to give tousits rides on it for money (presumably into their pockets) - they were proud as pigs in shit. apparently they had also bought a banana boat as well.

Actually I was in the water and thought they were rehabilitating the reef, which although nice was in pretty crap condition, many broken corals etc.

There was loads and loads of these plastic frames holding small corals in plastic bottles or attached to concrete slabs.

But apparently they sell the corals, so these were coral farms placed on a close to destroyed reef.

In an effort to be mindful of conservation they have to rehabilitate 2 for every 8 they sell/take.

and frankly, having gone back this year, i can see a decline in the conservation efforts of the ppl, and its a little depressing...

Off to Burma again to play cricket, almost thwarted by bladdy Indo traffic!

This weekend I am playing cricket and golf in Burma with the SiamCC. Now two years ago when i flew there to play cricket I missed 2 flights and ended up paying for multiple tickets to get there, much to the amusement of my mates.

So I didnt want to miss any flights again this time. I ducked out of work early, left home at 4.30pm (that's leaving an hour and a half plus the two hours early at the airport... plenty of time! .... one would think ! )

Peak hour traffic in Jkt sucks big time! Even more so if you have a flat tire!

flight leaves at 19.50 - 2 hours from now! and we are still an hour from the airport, with a flat, so we had to leave the tollway! and stop to fix it.

Easier said than done,

I had to show the driver how to use the jack,

then which way to twist the wheel nuts, then which way to use the lever to get the wheel nuts off!

grrrr...

some other random guy come and helped also! In all the process took 30 mins!

and then the spare was bladdy flat also!

so we then had to drive futher to find a stall selling compressed air, fortunately we did, I got to the airport at 7.10 - check in was closed.

Fortunately, they opened when they saw me and allowed me to board.

A PREGNANT woman in Papua New Guinea..hung from a tree...gave birth
From correspondents in Port Moresby
February 26, 2008 11:12am

A PREGNANT woman in Papua New Guinea who was hung from a tree after being accused of sorcery gave birth to her baby while struggling to free herself.
Nolan Yekum and her husband Paul were dragged from their house and hung from a tree by fellow tribesmen who accused them of sorcery after the couple's neighbour suddenly died.
Their ordeal occurred in Kilip village near Banz in Western Highlands Province, PNG's newspaper The National reported today.
The woman and her baby girl, her third child, were doing well in Mt Hagen Hospital after two weeks in hiding, the report said.
Her husband said men entered their house in the middle of the night with a rope and tied it round their necks, accusing them of sorcery over their neighbour's death.
They were dragged outside and hung from a tree, he said.
"We managed to loosen the noose to get our feet on the ground ... we were able to free ourselves.
"My wife, who was about seven months pregnant, delivered the baby while struggling to free herself.
"It was a painful experience for me and her," Mr Yekum said.
He said he pleaded with villagers to wait for his neighbour's post-mortem examination and he accused local police of failing to act.
The couple denied practising sorcery.
